ENGAGING TEACHERS - BOOK CLUBS FOR COLLABORATION

Join the Restorative Discipline Conversation - Making PD Fun

BACKGROUND

A few years ago, I implemented the strategies in this book in my classroom as a result of a school wide initiative to improve our discipline.  I was overwhelmed by student response and by how it improved the learning environment.  Having already implemented a character development program,  the addition of Discipline That Restores brought a well-rounded, intentional strategy for fair discipline based on mutual respect.  Student engagement and empowerment increased as a result of using the strategies of this book partnered with Making Things Right,  a conflict resolution and mediation skills activity book.

Recent legislation has opened the door for more restorative practices in schools. New strategies are needed to engage students, decrease the dropout rate, reduce school violence, and create a safer and more caring environment for all students. These two resources, DTR and Making Things Right,  are powerful tools for the implementation of restorative practices.   Join me in exploring these ideas in depth and planning for ways to be re-energized with a fresh vision for your classroom for the upcoming year.

HOW YOU CAN JOIN THE ONLINE CONVERSATION

Talk it up, set a date, and kick off a Discipline that Restores Book Club opportunity.  Here is how it works...

Sign up through the Edmodo (click here) learning platform.  (This is also a great way to learn about the benefits of this user-friendly learning platform that you might want to use in your classroom.)  Each week have your group read two chapters together.  After reading the chapters, the group facilitator (or take turns facilitating) will post a prompt for reflection and discussion (everyone contributes).

     1.  Sign up via Edmodo (link provided above)
     2.  Purchase the Book (links provided above)
     3.  Read Introduction and Chapters assigned weekly
     4.  Read and Respond to the prompt posted

Plan a LIVE final reflection party to CELEBRATE your online professional development. Who knows you may generate enough excitement on campus for the next steps...these online classes...

  1. You also might want to meet-up face-to-face periodically for more in depth and problem solving discussions!
