CHARTER SCHOOLS: A MODEL FOR RESTORATIVE JUSTICE
|
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO STAND OUT?
The increase of violence in schools has initiated a closer look at the ineffectiveness of
current practices and opened the door to explore more restorative avenues. Yet a key challenge
for restorative justice in schools is the culture change required to make the shift from a
traditional retributive paradigm to a restorative paradigm. This project seeks to explore and
evaluate whether the comprehensive implementation of restorative justice in public charter
schools, free from traditional government regulation, holds promise as an educational model for
creating a more civil (restorative) culture. The research also seeks to examine the effects of
restorative prevention and intervention on school culture change in this charter model and how it
might produce more civil citizens. The model may also prove useful for traditional schools, as
well as other organizations.
